There are approximately 1,500 titi monkeys in the area, of the subspecies Saimiri oerstedii ssp. citrinellus. This subspecies is found only here, on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. There is another subspecies called Saimiri oerstedii ssp. oerstedii, which is found on Osa Peninsula, and Panama.
Since 2003, (when specific research on monkey numbers began in our area), there has been an increase from 1200 to 1500 Saimiri oerstedii ssp. citrinellus. This small change helped move them from "Critically Endangered" to "Endangered". This shows that our efforts have began to take effect; and we are confident that with more connectivity between monkey troops, their genetics and survival rates will increase.
